Spots on Coins

Is it normal to get silver proof coins or just new silver coins and for them to have spots? I may be just having poor luck, but several of the coins I have gotten lately have spots. One from Apmex, a Chinese Panda, has little brown spots. Then today I just got some coins shipped from the Perth Mint and one that is a very nice proof new coin has a little round spot that is whitish brown. Then I got a neat silver Turtle bar from Perth and it has a very large section that looks like something white spilled down it and dried up. It almost has the look of salt water that has dried and left some salt residue. Since it is from Australia I guess I won't be returning it due to shipping costs and hassle...but is this fairly normal for silver?

Not something I have seen alot of outside of graded slabbed coins. PCGS has had a bad run of spots on graded silver, but most of the raw stuff I have purchased and stuff I got straight from the US Mint was pretty much spot free. Don't worry though, it usually does not effect the value.

Are they on the actually coin or just the case? Try to wipe it off if you havent tried that already : )

The spots are definitely on the coin. Wish it was that easy though!

I have seen this alot lately on maples. I think it is some kind of acid bath they put coins in after they are pressed. If it is brown spots you may be able to remove them using EZ Est dip. It won't hurt the coin so it is worth a try if it really bothers you.

Is the coin authentic and non-numismatic? If so, then don't worry about spotting. Dip the coin if it really bothers you.

http://www.apmex.com/Resources/Catal.../36383_Rev.jpg There is a photo of a "coin" like the one I got with the worst white spots... Another one of them is a 2005 Silver Panda I got awhile back.

I have a few silver maple leafs with those white spots on them. I'm also curious if anyone nows what causes them.

I believe it is improper rinsing at the Mint.

Whatever it is....it is disappointing. The turtle coin is so neat but kind of ruined (appearance) with all the white crap. It is sealed in its certificate/display so it would be difficult to try cleaning this one...

I have white "milk" spots on quite a few of my SAE's and Leafs. There is a $50,000 reward offered by PCGS to anyone who comes up with method to remove these spots.

I can understand that. Dark spots are usually silver sulphide that is easy to remove, but white spots is silver chloride and that stuff is close to INDESTRUCTIBLE.

Sadly, I suspect it is some rogue-male PM afficionados pleasuring themselves repeatedly over their piles of silver.
I'd hose that shit down. :452:
